YOU’RE TEMPORARILY BLOCKED

Almost exactly a year ago, the first four episodes of Game of Thrones season five leaked online. The press screeners somehow made their way onto torrent sites, and within hours, were breaking piracy records left & right as peopleraced khổng lồ watch a month’s worth of the new season early.

This year, HBO isn’t taking any chances. Members are the press are getting exactly zero early screeners of episodes, meaning they’ll write reviews after they watch the show live, just lượt thích everyone else. But there might be one notable exception to lớn that rule.

President Barack Obama.

When interviewed on the red carpet of the premiere about season six, David Benioff & Dan Weiss were asked if there was ever a moment where they truly felt like they’d “made it” with the show.

“I think, for both of us, finding out the President wanted advanced copies of the episodes was an ‘ah-ha’ moment,” Weiss said. “That was a very strange moment.”

Did they agree?

“Yes,” Weiss replied. “He’s the leader of the miễn phí world.”

“When the commander-in-chief says, ‘I want lớn see advanced episodes,’ what are you gonna do?” said Benioff.

Given that this was discussed so close lớn the premiere, it seems likely that Obama may indeed still be getting secret episodes from season six, while the press will be in the dark. That would make him essentially the only person on earth outside of HBO itself khổng lồ get an early look at these episodes. I can already see the Drudge headline:

For HBO’s part, I don’t blame them at all for changing their screener policy for season six. This is the era when the show is finally fully pushing past what’s been written in George RR Martin’s books, as the author failed khổng lồ meet his deadlines for The Winds of Winter, the sixth book in the series which was already supposed to lớn be out by now. As such, whatever spoilers are coming are now on another level, as neither book-readers nor show-watchersknow what’s going lớn happen going forward. Another leak the way we saw last year could ruin that completely.

Even as someone who writes about TV & has gotten screeners in the past, I don’t think they’re really necessary in the first place. They’re convenient for us as writers, sure, but with a show that relies on secrecy as much as Game of Thrones, I can’t blame them for safeguarding against leaks. It’s really not all that hard khổng lồ write a nhận xét after a show airs, rather than prepping a write-up lớn go live right at the minute the show ends.

Hopefully Obama can be trusted with the information, though I suppose we vì chưng trust him with the nuclear codes. And if you think this is random, it’s not. Obama is a big fan hâm mộ of the show, & last year he asked if (spoilers ahead) Jon Snow was really dead after the season five finale.

“Jon Snow is deader than dead,” Thrones director David Nutter told him.Of course, that could mean he’s dead & then comes back to lớn life, but that’s a conversation for another day.

So this year, if anything does leak out of the new season?
